The PWA recently announced the recipients of their Rookies-of-the-year awards at the Aloha Classic prize giving. Unanimous backing from her peers earned Sarah-Quita Offringa (ARU-91 Starboard / MauiSails) this years women’s title – a real indicator of who the top names think will be the next big thing.
15-yr old Sarah-Quita sounded over the moon when we asked her how she felt to receive the ultimate respect of her fellow competitors.
What did it feel like to get the Rookie of the Year award?
‘I felt honored when I heard that I had become rookie of the year!’
Why do you think you have been so successful so far on the PWA tour?
‘I had and have a lot of support from my family, and also all the people on the PWA tour give me a lot of tips and support, which definitely helps me improve during competition’
Who helps you or is an icon for you?
‘My brother Quincy. But on tour for sure Taty helps me a lot’
Will you enter the waves next season?
‘I was able to practice waves a little this year in Maui and also in Pozo.
But I’m not sure if I will go to an only wave event next year’
Where are you training this winter?
At my home spot – ‘The Huts’ in Aruba!
How will you try to improve for 2007?
‘I would not only like to improve in freestyle, but also in waves and Slalom.
But for now I want to improve in freestyle. I will try to be more creative
and try more moves. Furthermore I will increase my time on the water and
practice here at the huts with the local windsurfers’
Thanks Sarah and congratulations!
