The 2006 Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam Registration Day
Under the imposing backdrop of Pozo’s, giant wind turbine, the worlds elite windsurfers have signed up for the marathon test of endurance that is the Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam. From 7th through 17th July old rivalries will be re-kindled when the big names like 2006 champions Bjorn Dunkerbeck (E-11, North Sails) and Micah Buzianis (US-34 JP / NeilPryde) go head to head in Slalom 42, and 2006 wave champion Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro/ Naish) takes on former winners such as Kevin Pritchard (US-3 Starboard / Maui Sails), Scott McKercher (KA-181, Starboard / Severne) and Josh Angulo (CV-1) in the waves.
Mouth-watering matches will be fought in women’s waves and freestyle too. Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral/ North Sails), Karin Jaggi (Z-14, F2/ North Sails) and Iballa Moreno (E-63, Mistral/ North Sails) will face new threats in the form of newcomers Laure Treboux (SUI-4) and Sarah-Quita Offringa (ARU-91 Starboard / Maui Sails) in the brutally windy arena of Pozo Izquierda.
Critical in the race for the world titles, this event can make or break a bid for end of year glory. Like the flags flying proudly high above the event site, even the biggest names will be in tatters by the end of this event. Relentless winds of up to 50 knots batter this beach, making any victors here the most deserving.
Missing from the entry list is Robby Swift (K-89, JP/ Neil Pryde) who sadly re-broke his foot again yesterday with an insane double loop. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon. Great to see on the list are booming amounts of women’s competitors, such as Waka Nishada (J-100 ), and new young men’s wave riding talent like Western Australian young gun, 15 yr old Jaeger Stone (KA- 120 Starboard / Severne).
