Focus On: Phil Soltysiak
Canadian freestyler Phil Soltysiak fills us in on his off-season tricks, training and travels.
PWA: Where are you right now?
PS: I’m in El Yaque, Margarita Island. It has not been the best season for wind here, but I’m still managing to get a lot of training in.
PWA: What have you been doing over the winter/early spring?
PS: After the last event of the tour last year in Sylt, I went to Jericoacoara in Brazil. I spent 10 weeks training there. Afterwards I spent nearly a month at home where I skied and worked a bit as a ski instructor. At the end of January I flew to Margarita Island where I’m at now.
PWA: The freestyle tour kicks off fairly late into the year this year. What
are you going to do until the first event in the summer?
PS: I am staying in Margarita until the first week of April. After that I have a trip planned to Baja San Carlos, Mexico, for a few weeks of wave sailing. I return home from that to write my exams for university and then plan to do a couple EFPT events before going over to the Canaries for the first PWA event.
PWA: Have you learnt any new moves recently?
PS: Ya, I’ve been working on a lot of the latest freestyle moves as well as being able to do double moves in more difficult conditions. I think landing moves like that consistently in heats is going to help me move up in the ranking.
PWA: Can you give us a tip from the top, where's the best place to freestyle
in the world?
PS: My favourite spot is definitely Jericoacoara in Brazil. You have waves for jumping, flat water between the waves and really strong wind every day. The level of freestyle sailing there is really high.
